Oh No & Galt MacDermot

- November 20, 2005
Oh No is nearly half way done with a new production project based upon samples from the vast catalog of Galt MacDermot, best known as the man behind the music from HAIR. Oh No will also rap on the project, alongside a host of others including Posdnous from De La Soul, Vast Aire of Cannibal Ox, Jean Grae, Roc C, Aloe Blacc and others. Oh No and Galt MacDermot met recently at the composer's home in Staten Island, NY.
The album will be called Exodus Into Unheard Rhythms
Stones Throw has a long standing relationship with Galt's label, Kilmarnock Records, through Stones Throw GM Egon. Egon has mined MacDermot's 60s and 70s catalog since he was briefly employed at the label in the late 90s. Egon has assembled various vinyl releases for the label, and three CD compilations of Galt's music - "Shapes of Rhythm/Woman is Sweeter," "Up From The Basement" and "Galt MacDermot in Film." All of the CD compilations have been distributed by Stones Throw, and art directed by Stones Throw's Matt Rowland.
Stones Throw fan club 45 #4 (by Madlib) and #11 (by Oh No) contained samples from and followed the releases of "Up From The Basement" and "Galt MacDermot in Film" respectively. When Egon commissioned Oh No to compose two tracks for his fan club 45, Oh No responded with over twenty, kickstarting the collaboration. Oh No's "My Aggin" remix, available only on the UK version of the "Move" single, is based on MacDermot samples.
The project's first single, featuring Posdnous of De La Soul, is scheduled for release in January.
