Koushik - Out My Window **** (Four Stars)
(Stones Throw)
Ladies and gentlemen, we are floating in space again, and our guide is Koushik, a man with a hip-hop background – though you wouldn’t know it. Out My Window doesn’t swagger, it shimmers. When the beats do come thudding in, they are interwoven with dreamy Philadelphia soul sounds (Welcome), are swamped by ethereal voices (Bright and Shinning) or have to share the space with West Coast pop (Lying in the Sun) or really strange psych-pop (the title track). The songs slip and slide around the beat, calling to mind the loose grooves of Shuggie Otis or Cody Chesnutt. The Ontario-based Koushik Ghosh may be one of those worrying blokes who goes around searching for the obscurest samples possible, but you wouldn’t know it: this isn’t an album to admire and analyse, it’s an album to wallow and luxuriate in. Koushik - Out My Window **** (Four Stars)
(Stones Throw)
Titles tell a sweetly zonked story on the debut album of ProTooled pastoral electro-psych from Koushik Ghosh. “Coolin”, “Floating On”…the Ontario hip-hop artist’s pocket soundscapes recline on balmy-beats beds, teased by woodwind and whispered vocals. Maps laid back in the sun with Spiritualized is the idea; the execution is lush.
