John Carroll Kirby has created the official soundtrack album for feature film The Luckiest Man in America. The album will be released digitally on May 2nd, with vinyl to follow. “The Whammy” is out now, with Logan Hone on soprano saxophone and David Leach on percussion.
Directed by Samir Oliveros and starring Paul Walter Hauser, Johnny Knoxville, Patti Harrison, Maisie Williams, and Walton Goggins, The Luckiest Man in America tells the story of Michael Larson’s appearance on the game show “Press Your Luck”. The movie is out this weekend in over 600 theatres.
John says: “Samir and I hit it off immediately. We’d talk music and travel and cooking. Things flowed smoothly and we always felt aligned. Samir was always down to experiment, and that freedom really allowed me to feel like I was an integral part of the storytelling.”
The Luckiest Man in America isn’t John Carroll Kirby’s first foray into film scores; his original soundtrack album for the animated feature Cryptozoo came out in 2021. Kirby has also released several albums on Stones Throw, most recently 2023’s Blowout – “His most energetic and immediately enjoyable release yet… an endlessly vibey, psychedelically tropical eruption of new-age electro funk and jazz”, according to Pitchfork.
Following two recent sold-out dates at NYC’s Public Records, John Carroll Kirby will be playing US shows with Khruangbin this May, along with headline shows in select cities.
